The Problem of Debt
Many people in our society are
encountering situations where, because of redundancy, illness or some other
unexpected change in personal circumstances, they cannot afford to repay
household bills, loans and other forms of credit they have taken out. Others may
have got into debt because they do not have good money management skills. Some
have simply borrowed more than they can afford to repay.
There are those in debt who do
not know how to get themselves out of the situation. If action is not taken the
situation will rapidly worsen. Interest, fees and charges may mount up or the
lender applies pressure to secure repayment. Such out-of-control or “unmanaged”
personal debt is not confined to any one geographic area. It is a national
problem. There are no statistics on how many people have unmanaged debt in
Staplehurst and the surrounding areas but there are certainly some, if not many.
The Community Centre for Debt Advice in Staplehurst was
specifically set up to provide trusted, confidential, hands-on support and
advice to those with the problem of debt.
